Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Services (UPPSC) examination is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) to select eligible candidates for various posts in the Ministries and departments running under the State government. Candidates who qualify for the exam are designated at district, divisional, sub-divisional, and state-level posts. The exam is conducted in three phases – Preliminary, Main, and Interview. The exam will be held in two shifts – morning (9:30 am to 11:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm to 4:30 pm). Check out the detailed date sheet in the ‘Important Dates’ section.
UPPSC has announced changes in the Main exam pattern. Here are the details:
- The number of papers in the General Studies section has been increased from 2 to 4.
- 20 questions (10 objective and 10 subjective) will be asked in each GS paper.
- There will be only one optional subject instead of 2 in the Main examination.
No changes have been made in the General Hindi, Essay, and optional subjects.

UPPCS Exam 2023 Pattern & Syllabus
UP PCS exam is conducted in three stages:
- Preliminary Examination
- Main Examination
- Viva-Voce/Personality Test
Preliminary Exam
The preliminary exam will consist of two papers of 200 marks each. The duration of each paper will be 2 hours. Both the papers will have Multiple Choice Questions. Here are the timings for both the papers:

Paper II will only be of a qualifying nature, where candidates must obtain a minimum score of 33%. The marks of only Paper I will be considered for preparing the merit list.
Main Exam
The Main exam will comprise compulsory and optional subjects. Here are the details for both:

Optional Subjects
Candidates are required to select only one subject from the list of optional subjects. The optional subject will have two papers. Each paper will have two sections, and each section will include four questions. Candidates are required to answer only 5 questions in each paper; however, they must answer a minimum of 2 questions from each section. Here is the list of optional subjects:

Viva-Voce/ Personality Test
The test will check the candidate’s general awareness, character, intelligence, expression, and general suitability for the post. It will be of a maximum of 100 marks.
UPPCS 2023 Syllabus
The syllabus for the Preliminary exam, as mentioned in the official notice, is as follows:
PAPER I - General Studies-I
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, and Economic geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System. Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General Issues on Bio-diversity, Environmental ecology, and Climate Change- that do not require subject specialization.
- General Science
Paper-II - General Studies-II
- Comprehension
- Elementary Mathematics up to Class X level- Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, and Statistics
- Interpersonal skills, including communication skills
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- General mental ability
- General Hindi up to Class X level
- General English up to class X level
UPPSC has provided the complete UP PCS syllabus in the official notification for the exam. Candidates can download the same from APPENDIX 5 and 6 of the official notice.
There is no specific syllabus for phase III – Viva-Voce/Personality Test.
UPPCS Exam 2023 Eligibility
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission has a set of rules for interested candidates who want to be in the state government's administration. The eligibility criteria comprise the following –
Age Limit (as of 1st July 2023)
- Minimum – 21 years
- Maximum – 40 years
i.e., candidates must not be born earlier than 2nd July 1983 or later than 1st July 2002. For Physically Handicapped (PH) category candidates, there is a relaxation in the upper age limit. The maximum age limit for these candidates is 55 years.
Educational Qualification
Candidate must have passed a bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) or equivalent qualification from any recognized University up to the last date of application receipt. Specific qualification is required for some posts. Detailed information on the same can be checked in the official notification.
UPPCS Exam 2023 Application Process
UP PCS 2023 online application forms will be available on the official site. Candidates must fill out the application forms before the last date. Here are the steps to be followed:
- Visit the online portal of the UPPSC, i.e. http://uppsc.up.nic.in
- Click on the “Apply” button on the homepage.
- Fill up the application form by providing details like name, valid email ID, address and active phone number.
- Upload the scanned copy of the signature and passport size photograph.
- Pay the application fee using a credit card, debit card, net banking, e-challan, etc.
- Save the registration number and password and take a printout of the same for future use.

UP PCS 2023 E-Admit Card
UPPSC will issue the PCS e-admit cards for the Preliminary and Main exams two weeks before the exam. The UPPSC PCS 2023 prelims exam will be held on 14th May 2023, while the Main for the same will be held on 23rd September 2023.
Candidates must note that separate admit cards will be provided for different stages of the exam, viz. Preliminary, Main, and Personality Test. Candidates can download the same using their registration ID and password. The e-admit card will comprise of candidate’s roll number, exam date, time, and venue. It is mandatory to carry the admit card along with valid ID proof to the examination venue. Candidates without admit cards will not be allowed to appear for the exam under any circumstances.
UP PCS 2023 Result
UPPSC will announce the final result after the Preliminary, Main, and Interview phases of the UP PCS examination. However, separate results will be released after every phase of the examination. Those who qualify Preliminary phase are shortlisted for the Main exam, and those who qualify for the Main are called for the Interview round. The final merit list is released after the completion of the interview round.

UPPSC PCS Interview 2023
Candidates who will be able to qualify for the Mains exam will be called for the Interview round. The UPPSC PCS Interview will carry 100 marks. The Interview round tests the suitability of the candidate for his or her recruitment in the UP state services.
