University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET)

University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is conducted to select candidates for the post of Assistance Professor and the award of Junior Research Fellowship. While until now, the NET exam was being conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, however, from 2018 (December Session), it has been decided by the Human Resource Department (HRD) Ministry that the examination will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The UGC NET exam consists of Paper I and Paper II. In Paper I, there are 50 questions based on teaching/research aptitude, comprehension, divergent thinking, reasoning ability, and general awareness. In Paper II, there are 100 objective type questions (2 marks each) based on the subject selected by the candidates.

Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET)

Conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is an entrance exam which is conducted nationwide for the post of teaching. This test is mandatory for getting teaching jobs in government schools from Class 1 to Class 8. CTET was introduced by the Government of India with an objective to improve the quality of education in schools and to meet the objective of free education for children under the Education Act.

The basic eligibility required for CTET is that the candidate is having a bachelor’s degree or diploma with at least 50% aggregate marks. The exam consists of Paper I and Paper II. While Paper I is conducted for the applicants who wish to be a teacher for classes I to V, Paper II is organized for applicants who intend to be a teacher for classes VI to VIII. Candidates are allowed to appear for both Papers, provided they meet the required eligibility.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research University Grant Commission National Eligibility Test (CSIR UGC NET)

CSIR UGC NET is an entrance examination conducted worldwide by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) for the eligible Indian Nationals for the award of Junior Research Fellowship and for appointing Lecturers in various subjects such as Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences. CSIR UGC NET exam is organised twice a year. It comprises of a single paper that has multiple choice Question-based test.

Although a candidate may apply for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or Lectureship (LS), however, if he/she applies for JRF and meets the eligibility criteria for Lectureship as well, he/she will also be considered for both JRF & LS.

Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)

Teacher Eligibility Test has become a minimum eligibility criterion if you wish to pursue a career as a government teacher. The governing body of TET exams is the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). All rules and guidelines such as eligibility, syllabus etc. are decided by NCTE only. Almost, each and every state and central government conduct their TET exam every year. Also, there are some states that conduct the TET exam twice a year and there are some states that conduct the exam once in two or three years depending on the vacancies to be filled. As states conduct their own Teacher Eligibility Test, hence they call it with their state names, for example, Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test is known as UPTET exam, in Tamil Nadu, it is called TNTET, and in Kerala, it has been termed as K-TET.

Moreover, the test which is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on an all-India basis known as the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). The CTET exam is considered valid for Central Government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), Central Tibetan Schools and many more.

Schools that are under the administrative control of Union Territories of Chandigarh, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and NCT of Delhi are also validated by CTET exam. A State Government can also exercise the option of considering the CTET if they decide to not to exercise the State TET.  Unaided private schools may also exercise the option of adopting CTET.

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) is an undergraduate level program of 2-year duration. This course is specially designed for students who wish to pursue a career in teaching and related fields. B.Ed. is basically a skill-based training program that trains students about different aspects of classroom teaching.  The minimum eligibility for B.Ed. is the completion of an undergraduate degree course in any discipline. B.Ed. course can be pursued through full time, correspondence or distance learning by numerous universities all over the country. Not only are B.Ed. degree holders eligible for teaching profession but also for working as educational writers for newspapers, journals, magazines, and websites.

Uttar Pradesh Basic Training Certificate (UP BTC) / Uttar Pradesh Diploma in Elementary Education (UP D.EL.Ed)

UP BTC Exam which is now known as Uttar Pradesh Diploma in Elementary Education (UP D.EL.Ed) is a two-year teaching training programme organised by the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board. With this exam, the main objective is to select professionals for the post of teachers, student counselors, tutors, and assistant teachers. Candidates who have passed their 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board with minimum 50% marks are considered eligible to apply for UP D.El.Ed exam. Admission process of D.El.Ed course comprises an entrance exam followed by a personal interview round.  The syllabus of the course varies from college to college. Only those candidates who qualify the entrance exam are called for the interview round. On the basis of performance in the entrance exam, marks obtained, and personal interview, a candidate is provided admission into the course.
