MHRD Scholarship 2021 - Types, Eligibility, Selection Process, Application Process, and Rewards

The Ministry of Human Resource Development contributes to the nation's socio-economic development through its two departments, viz. the Department of School Education & Literacy and the Department of Higher Education. These departments work together to uplift the educational standards in the country. Therefore, various scholarships are offered at different levels to assist both school and college students. Here are the complete details related to MHRD scholarships for eligibility, rewards, selection process, and application process.

Type of Scholarships

Two types of scholarships are offered by the ministry as under:

  • National Level
  • External Level

National level scholarships are run by different MHRD departments, while the external level scholarships are offered in collaboration with the government of foreign countries under the Educational/ Cultural exchange programmes.

MHRD Scholarships 2021 - Eligibility Criteria

Candidates are required to meet different eligibility conditions viz. age limit, academic merit, annual family income, educational qualification, and domicile. Here are the details for different scholarships:

For National Level Scholarships

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University students

  • Students must be pursuing a regular medical or engineering course from a recognised college.
  • Must be above 80th percentile in class 12th.
  • The annual family income must be less than ₹ 8 lakh.
  • Students must not be receiving any other scholarship.
  • Those pursuing studies through correspondence or distance learning are not eligible.

2.

Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) for Jammu Kashmir

  • Must have passed class 12th or 10+3 Diploma from J&K board, CBSE, or J&K State Polytechnic
  • Must have a J & K domicile.
  • Annual family income must be less than or equal to ₹ 8 lakh.
  • Those willing to study outside J&K can also apply for the scholarship.

3.

National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (NSIGSE)

  • Must belong to SC/ ST category.
  • Must have passed class 8th exam from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and enrolled in class 9th in a state government, local body or government-aided schools.
  • Only unmarried girls below 16 years of age are eligible.

4.

National Means Cum Merit Scholarship

  • Open for students of class 9th and will continue till class 10th to 12th
  • Must have secured 55% (50% for SC/ ST) in class 8th.
  • Must have obtained a minimum of 55% marks in class 7th.
  • The annual family income must be less than ₹ 1.50 lakh.

5.

Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF)

  • Studying in the first year or have completed B.Tech., M.Tech. or Integrated M.Sc. from IITs/ IIITs/ NITs/ IIISc/ IISE₹
  • Those who are admitted through JEE/ UCEED, KVPY or SCB can also apply.
  • Those who have completed the course in the past five years are also eligible.

6.

AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girls

  • Open for girl students pursuing a Diploma/ Degree course at an AICTE recognised institute. Only first-year students can apply.
  • Annual income of the family must be less than ₹ 8 lakh.
  • Scholarship is applicable for up to two girl children of the family.

7.

AICTE-Saksham Scholarship

  • Open for differently-abled students (disability level more than 40%).
  • Must have taken admission in the first year of technical degree/ diploma course at an AICTE recognised institute.
  • Annual family income must be less than ₹ 8 lakh.

Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom

  • Candidates with Bachelor’s or Master’s degree are eligible. Those in the final year of such a degree are also eligible.
  • The minimum percentage of marks in such a degree must be 65% or above in Science and 60% or above in Social Science.
  • Applicants’ age must not be more than 40 years.
  • Applicants must have enrolled for an MPhil degree leading to a PhD at a UK university.

2.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships

  • Open for students who are willing to study abroad in New Zealand.
  • Must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a minimum of 65% marks.

3.

Chinese Government Scholarships

  • Open for UG, PG, Doctoral, General Scholars, and Senior Scholar level of studies.
  • For UG course: Students must have passed class 12th with 60% marks and the age must be below 25 years.
  • For PG course: Students must have passed graduation with 60% marks and the age must be below 35 years.
  • For Doctoral course: students need to have passed PG with 60% marks and the age must be below 40 years.
  • For General scholars: students must have completed at least two years of their UG level studies with 60% marks and the age must be below 45 years.
  • For Senior scholars: applicants must be an associate professor or have a master’s degree with 60% marks and the age must be below 50 years.

4.

South Korean Government Scholarships

  • Open for Master’s, doctoral, and Postdoctoral level studies.
  • For Master’s level: Must have a Bachelor’s degree and be under 40 years of age.
  • For Doctoral level: Must have a Master’s degree and be under 40 years of age.
  • For Postdoctoral level: Must have a doctoral degree/ diploma and be under 45 years of age.
  • For Biotechnology and Electronic Engineering: Candidates must have secured 65% or more.

5.

Japanese Government Scholarships

  • The scholarship is open for research-level, master level, and PhD courses. Subjects included are social science, humanities, management studies, mathematical science, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, and more.
  • Applicants age must be below 35 years.
  • For master’s and research level: students must have a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 65% marks.
  • For a PhD degree, students must have a master's degree with a minimum of 65% marks in the relevant field.

6.

Italian Government Scholarships

  • Open for the study of Master’s degree, PhD, Research, and Italian language & culture courses.
  • For Master’s level: students must graduate from India and should be below 28 years of age.
  • For PhD level: students must meet the qualification requirements of the concerned Italian University with a letter of acceptance from them. Candidates must not be more than 30 years of age.
  • For Research level: Students must be below 40 years of age and must submit their research project along with the admission letter.
  • Proficiency certificate in the Italian language for language and culture courses.

7.

Mexican Government Scholarships

  • Open for graduate, specialisation, Master’s degree, doctorate-level research
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD degree with a GPA of 80 on a scale of 1 to 100.
  • Students are required to enrol for a course at any of the participating institutions.

8.

Israel Government Scholarships

  • Those holding a letter of acceptance from an Israeli University/ Supervisor.
  • Applicant must have a master’s degree for research/ specialisation in Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Environment Studies, Business Management, and Mass Communication.
  • For the Hebrew Language and Literature course, students must be pursuing a postgraduate course in the same subject.
  • Proficiency in English or Hebrew language is a must.

9.

Brazillian Government Scholarships

  • Open for residents of India between 18 and 25 years of age.
  • Must have passed class 12th board examination with minimum 60% (overall) and minimum 60% in English.
  • Those studying in class 12th can also apply but they have to present their final mark sheet and board certificate at the time of enrolment in a Brazillian University.
  • Proficiency in the Portuguese language is also required.

10.

Presidential Scholarships, Sri Lanka

  • Those pursuing a Bachelor's degree can apply for the scholarship. Medicine, Dentistry, and Engineering courses are not included.
  • Applicant's age must be below 25 years.

11.

Ms Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship

  • Open for students with uniform academic record with a minimum of 60% marks in PG level and a PhD degree in the respective subject.
  • Scholars between 30 and 40 years can apply for the fellowship.
  • Must have an inclination towards an academic career in the following specialisations:
    • Political Science
    • Economics
    • History
  • Must have a minimum teaching experience of 3 years at UG/ PG level after completing PhD.

Applications for the national level scholarships are to be submitted via respective official portals while for the external scholarships, MHRD runs its own portal named ‘Sakshat’. Here are the processes for application submission.
