Government of Orissa Announces Medhabruti Scholarship for Students
The Department of Higher Education, Odisha gives ‘Medhabruti’ scholarships to students. It is also referred to as the E-medhabruti scholarship scheme. This scholarship aims at encouraging students to pursue higher education on the merit-cum-means basis. The scholarship can be availed by students to pursue Technical education, General education or Professional education. There should not be any break or discontinuation in studies to become eligible for the e-Medhabruti scholarship scheme.
There are 4 categories of the ‘Medhabruti’ Scholarship Scheme as follows -
- Junior Merit Scholarship Scheme (on Class 12th level)
- Senior Scholarship Scheme (on Graduation level)
- Post Graduate Scholarship
- Technical Scholarship Scheme

Medhabruti Scholarship 2017 -2018 on Junior Merit Level
This scholarship can be availed by students after qualifying Class 10th and pursuing 10+ 2 level of studies.
Benefits –
- Those students who are selected for the Junior Level Medhabruti scholarship get ₹ 300 on the monthly basis for 10 months in a year. It means in a year, the beneficiary student can get ₹3000.
- The total period of the scholarship is 2 years. It means each beneficiary student can get maximum ₹6,000 on the Junior Level.
- The total number of the scholarship is 10,000.
Eligibility -
- An applicant should have a minimum score of 60% marks in the Class 10th to become eligible for the scholarship.
- Or
- The student with either of the following grades A 1, A 2, B 1 and B 2 should be converted into the equivalent percentages as follows- A 1- 95%; A 2 – 85%; B 1 – 75% and B 2 – 65%.
- The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed ₹ 6.0 lakhs.
Medhabruti Scholarship 2017 -2018 on the Senior Level
This scholarship can be availed by students after passing Class 12th and getting enrolled in the graduation level studies.
Benefits
- Those students who are selected for the Senior Level Medhabruti Scholarship get ₹ 500 on the monthly basis for 10 months. It means in a year, the beneficiary student can get ₹5000.
- The total period of the scholarship is 3 years. It means each beneficiary student can get maximum ₹15,000 at the Senior Level.
- The total number of the scholarship is 3,000.
Eligibility
- An applicant should have a minimum score of 60% marks in the Class 12th to become eligible for the scholarship.
- Or
- The student with either of the following grades A 1, A 2, B 1 and B 2 which should be converted into the equivalent percentages as follows- A 1- 95%; A 2 – 85%; B 1 – 75% and B 2 – 65%.
- The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed ₹ 6.0 lakhs.
Medhabruti Scholarship 2017 -2018 on the Post Graduation Level
This scholarship can be availed by the students after earning a Bachelor’s degree and pursuing a Masters Programme.
Benefits
- Those students who are selected for the PG Level Medhabruti Scholarship get ₹ 1000 on the monthly basis for 10 months. It means in a year, the beneficiary student can get ₹10,000.
- The total period of the scholarship is 2 years. It means each beneficiary student can get maximum ₹20,000 on the Senior Level.
- The total number of the scholarship is 1500.
Eligibility
- An applicant should have a minimum aggregate score of 60% marks (3 years average) in Graduation to become eligible for the scholarship.
- The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed ₹ 6.0 lakhs.
- This scholarship is not meant for M. Phil or Ph. D students.
Medhabruti Scholarship 2017 -2018 on the Technical Level
This scholarship is meant for those students who are enrolled in the professional studies.
Benefits
- Those students who are selected for the Technical Level Medhabruti Scholarship get ₹ 1000 on the monthly basis for 10 months. It means in a year, the beneficiary student can get ₹10,000.
- The total period of the scholarship covers the complete duration of the studies. It can be extended for maximum 5 years. It means each beneficiary student can get maximum ₹50,000 on the Senior Level.
- The total number of the scholarship is 10,000.
Eligibility
- The applicant should have obtained at least 60 % marks in the Class 12th exam and Bachelor’s exam.
- The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed 6.00 lakhs.
- The applicant should have secured admission in the reputed national or state colleges/ institutions through the common entrance exam.
- The number of the scholarships is reserved for the various professional courses as follows -
- For the Engineering and Architecture course, the total number of the scholarship that is reserved is - 7,000.
- For the M.B.B.S course, the total number of the scholarship that is reserved is – 700.
- For the B.D.S course, the total number of the scholarship that is reserved is – 300.
- For the Master level studies in MCA, MBA, MFC, PGDM, the total number of the scholarship that is reserved is – 500.
- For the Agriculture Science courses, the total number of the scholarship that is reserved is – 1500.
How to Avail the ‘Medhabruti’ Scholarship Benefit
- To avail the ‘Medhabruti’ scholarship, students should have a saving bank account. The scholarship is disbursed to the selected beneficiaries through the ECS (Electronic Credit System) directly into their bank account.
- It should be noted that in case the student does not receive the scholarship amount in any financial year, then it would be transferred to them in the succeeding fiscal year.
Conditions of Medhbruti Scholarship Disbursal
- The scholarship aims at maintaining gender equality while distributing the scholarship. It is given in the 50:50 ratios between girls and boys. In case, the number of the boys or girls is lesser than the number of the available scholarships, then it would be retained to be given to the same gender of the student in the succeeding years.
- In case, the total number of the applicants for the technical scholarship is lesser than the total number of the available scholarship then it would be distributed among the other categories of the beneficiary students.
- It should be noted that the Diploma courses are not covered under the Technical scholarship.
- If the student is already availing benefits under any other Central/ State/ Other institutions, then he/she is not eligible for this scholarship.
- This scholarship cannot be availed by the distance learning students.
Applications for the ‘Medhabruti’ Scholarship
Applicants from Odisha
Those students who are selected by the government of Odisha under the SAMS (System of Academic Management System) to get admission in the 10+ 2 or Graduation need not apply separately. They should simply submit their requisite documents like Income certificate, Marksheets, Address Proof, and bank account details with their college/ school authorities who will apply on behalf of the candidate for the scholarship.
Applicants from Outside Odisha
- Applicants from outside Odisha should apply through the ‘e- Medhabruti’ link, www.dheodisha.gov.in. They should read all instructions carefully before applying for the scholarship.
- They are also required to download the online ‘e- Medhabruti’ scholarship application form and get it filled. They should attach all supporting documents and get it countersigned by the Head/ Principal of their institutions and send at the following address –
‘Under Secretary (Scholarship), Higher Education Department, Odisha Secretariat, Bhubaneswar – 751001’ by the Registered Post.
