Eligibility Criteria To Appear For UGC NET Exam
The National Testing Agency conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Earlier, the exam was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). From the year 2018 (December session) onwards, NTA is conducting the exam. The next UGC NET exam will be held from 9th to 12th July 2022 and 12th to 14th August 2022. The exam will be conducted through computer-based mode in two shifts. The duration of the exam will be 180 minutes with no break between Paper-1 and Paper-2.
The UGC NET exam is held to determine the eligibility of an Indian national for the college and university level lectureship and the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Eligibility Requirement for UGC NET Exam
1. A candidate with minimum 55% marks in Master’s Degree or the equivalent exam from an institution or university recognised by UGC in Humanities (including languages) and social science. Electronic Science, Computer Science & Applications etc. can appear for the UGC NET Exam.
NOTE: The minimum marks must be at least 55% without rounding off the figure. Also, if a candidate belongs to Other Backward Classes (OBC) like non-creamy layer/Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with Disability (PWD) needs to have minimum 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree or its equivalents exam to be eligible for appearing in UGC NET Exam.
2. Candidates who have taken OR will be taking Master’s Degree (final year) exam and whose results are yet to be declared or candidates whose exams have been postponed can also apply for the UGC NET Exam. However, such candidates will be given admission conditionally and will be considered eligible for the award of JRF or Assistant Professor only if they clear their Master’s Degree examination or equivalent examination with minimum 55% marks (50% for OBC category candidates). Candidates are required to complete their Master’s Degree exam within 2 years from the date of UGC NET result with a required percentage (without rounding off). Candidates failing to meet the condition shall be considered disqualified.
3. Candidates with Ph.D. Degree whose Master’s level exam would have been completed by September 19th, 1991 (regardless of the date of result) will be considered eligible for 5% relaxation in aggregate marks i.e. 50% (55-5= 50) for appearing in UGC NET Exam.
4. Candidates are suggested to appear in the subject of their Master only. However, if the subject of a candidate is not covered under the list of subjects are allowed to appear in a related subject.
5. Candidates must not send any documents, certificates to prove their eligibility not any printout of their application form to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). However, candidates must meet the eligibility for the test. In case of any ineligibility found by the UGC or CBSE at any phase, the candidate will be disqualified and will be considered liable for legal action.
6. In case of holding a Master’s Degree/Diploma/Certificate given by Indian University/ Institute or Foreign Diploma/Degree/Certificate given by the foreign University or Institute, Candidates on their own are required to determine the equivalence of their Diploma/Degree/Certificate with PG Degree of recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
Age Limit and Relaxation for a Candidate in UGC NET Exam
1. FOR JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
Candidate must not be more than 30 years. However, candidates belonging to OBC category are given a relaxation of up to 5 years. Also, candidates having research experience are also provided relaxation limited to the period spent on research in the related subject of Master’s Degree, subject to a maximum of 5 years. In such cases, candidates will need to produce a certificate from an appropriate authority. In additions, candidates with LLM degree are also given relaxation of 3 years. In any circumstances, the total relaxation of age must not exceed 5 years period.
2. FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
There is no age limit for the candidates applying for Assistant Professor.
EXEMPTION (ELIGIBILITY FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR)
- NET/SLET/SET is the minimum eligibility requirement for the recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in Universities/Institutions/Colleges. However, exemption from NET/SLET/SET will be managed by University Grant Commission (UGC) regulations and amendments informed in the Gazette of India from time to time.
- Candidates who would have cleared UGC/CSIR JRF exam before 1989 are also exempted from appearing in UGC NET.
In the case of SET, candidates who have passed the States Eligibility Test (SET) authorized by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor conducted before June 1st, 2002, are exempted from appearing for NET, being considered eligible to apply for Assistant Professor post anywhere in India. However, for SET conducted from June 1st, 2002, the qualified candidates are deemed eligible to apply for the Assistant Professor only in the Universities/Colleges/Institutions located in the state from where they would have cleared their SET Exam.
